Alki Point, WA

In 1910, the Bureau of Lighthouses, with a $9,999 appropriation to build a light station, purchased a 1.5 acre parcel of land on Alki Point jutting out into Puget Sound. On April 3, 1913, Alki Point Light Station was lit! It consisted of a 37 foot concrete and masonry octagonal tower with an attached fog signal building and two houses for the lighkeepers’ families. There were two keepers working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. The light from the Fourth Order Fresnel lens was visible for approximately 12 miles, protecting mariners from shoals, reefs and marking the harbor entrance.
