Matagorda - TX

Concerned that a hurricane would destroy a tall structure on the Texas coast, officials coated the Matagorda Lighthouse with iron plates. Their planning paid off, for in 1886, a tropical storm swept the coasts, destroying everything in sight, but leaving the tower intact. The black sentinel is well known to boaters near Corpus Christi.
