Lighthouse Digest Magazine

San Luis Obispo, California

In 1867, President Andrew Johnson signed an executive order authorizing the Department of the Interior to reserve land for lighthouses on the Pacific Coast, including San Luis Obispo. Finally in 1886, a $55,000 appropriation was made for the construction of a lighthouse. The proposed site proved to be difficult to access by land, making it necessary to transport supplies by steamer and first bids on the job were too high. On June 30, 1890, the light atop a 40' tower, attached to a Victorian style keeper's dwelling, was first lit. In 1969, the original Fourth Order Fresnel Lens was deactivated and replaced with a modern beacon. The Fourth Order Lens is on display in the San Luis Obisbo Library.
