Ship John Shoal DE

Named for a ship that grounded on the invisible shoal in 1797, a lighthouse was necessary to mark the dangerous area to others. A cast iron cylinder 30 feet below the water was filled with concrete and rocks to mark the site in 1874. A temporary keepers quarters was placed above the foundation until the light could be completed. Severe Delaware weather in 1875 caused great vibration and the three keepers abandoned their posts out of fear of their safety. The foundation held however. A Victorian-style cottage was set atop the caisson and the light was lit in 1877. The light was automated in 1973 but still serves as an active light.
