Statue of Liberty NY

Rising from New York’s Harbor, the statue was a gift to celebrate the 100th anniversary of America’s independence. Due to the island location, Liberty was an important navigational aid and needed to be lit. Holes were cut in the solid flame and lanterns cast light through the glass. The beams of light were indistinguishable from the New York skyline. Flood lights were tried next but these cast weird shadows. During the restoration for the 200th Anniversary, the glass-studded flame was replaced with a re-creation of the original flame as designed by Bartholdi.
