American Shoal FL

Funds for this skeletal lighthouse off the shore of Florida were appropriated in 1878 and the pre-fabricated iron tower was assembled on American Shoal atop a massive underwater platform. The tower rose 119 feet complete with a first order Fresnel lens. The light was lit for the first time on July 15, 1880. The beacon was automated in 1963 and the lens replaced by a solar-powered optic.
