Cape Canaveral FL

A very ineffectual lighthouse was built in 1848 and the Civil War halted construction of a new, taller tower until 1868. The new Florida light could be seen for 18 nautical miles and was constructed of cast iron to withstand the storms of the area. Painted black and white striped, the sentinel has been mistaken for a rocket by observers.
