Several lights have been constructed on this site. The tower was deemed indispensable to the safety of commerce in 1859 and raised to 170 feet equipped with a first order lens. Cape May is the nation’s second oldest, continually operating lighthouse. The New Jersey light has been renovated since 1986 however erosion remains a serious concern today.
