Fenwick, DE

It became necessary to build a lighthouse near Fenwick Shoals when coastal shipping along the Delaware Bay increased dramatically during the mid- nineteenth century. Engineers choose the highest point in the area to build a tower and keeper’s dwelling. A second dwelling was added in 1878 to accommodate the growing keeper’s families. The keepers were able to get provisions to the island only by boat until a bridge was finally built. The Coast Guard deactivated the beacon in 1978 and control was given to a non-profit organization. The beacon was re-lit in 1982.
