Images of America - South Carolina Lighthouses

Written by Margie Willis Clary and Kim McDermott. South Carolina boasts one of the oldest working lighthouses today. In 1767, Morris Island Lighthouse was built at the entrance to Charleston Harbor and before 1860 there were lighthouses in Georgetown, Cape Romain, Bull’s Bay and Hunting Island. During the Civil War, all lighthouses on the eastern coast were darkened and many destroyed. After the war, damaged towers were repaired and additional lights erected on Daufuskie and Hilton Head Islands. Erosion and neglect have taken their toll on many of these southern lights. The authors hope that this book will provide insight into how each light played a part in making South Carolina’s shores safer for seafarers. Soft cover 126 pages.
