Scotland's University of Aberdeen has purchased the Cromarty Lighthouse located in Moray Firth on the northeast coast of Scotland.

Since 1990 the university has been using the keeper's house and other outbuildings for research and teaching marine ecology; especially the bottlenose dolphins that are prevalent in the harbor. An official of the university said they now look forward to exploring how they can best use the structure to maintain the maritime heritage link with Scotland's marine environment.

The Cromarty Lighthouse was built in 1846 by author Robert Louis Stevenson's uncle, Alan Stevenson. It was automated in 1985 and deactivated by the Northern Lighthouse Board in 2006. The Northern Lighthouse Board has been in charge of all lighthouses in Scotland and Isle of Man since 1786.
