Located in one of the most scenic areas of the country, the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse in Cape Vincent, New York, looking like a brand new lighthouse again is ready to greet visitors for this new century.

The lighthouse, as early as 1994, was in such bad shape it was considered one of America's most endangered lighthouses. But thanks to the small, but dedicated, group of volunteers of the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Historical Society, Tibbetts Point Light now stands as one of the proudest beacons in America.

Repairs made this past July, the third time in the past 6 years, will hopefully save the 1854 structure for many years to come.

The name of the lighthouse comes from Captain John Tibbett who, in 1827, deeded three acres of land to the federal government to build a lighthouse at this site. That first lighthouse lasted until 1854 when it was replaced by the current tower. It is unknown, and unlikely, that any photographs of the original tower exist.

In May of 1981, the United States Coast Guard left Tibbetts Point Lighthouse and a few years later the caretakers house was opened as a Youth Hostel where you can spend the night.

In March of 1988, the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Historical Society under the direction of Shirley Hamblen was formed for the purpose of restoring and saving the lighthouse. Ever since, the group has been struggling to raise money to maintain the historic structure.

If you are interested in spending the night in the keeper's house, reservations are required. You can contact Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Hostel, RR 1 Box 330, Cape Vincent, NY 13618.

If you would like to join the Historical Society or make a contribution to their ongoing efforts, contact Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Historical Society, P.O. Box 683, Cape Vincent, NY 13618.
