It seems that fishermen were complaining that the color schemes of Manakodam and Vypin Lighthouses (north of Alleppey) which both have red and white bands were causing confusion as day-marks. So the government of India changed the Manakodam Lighthouse to an all white tower and decided to paint Alleppey with the red and white bands. There is currently a proposal in India to construct eight more lighthouses.
