Montauk NY

George Washington personally ordered the construction of Montauk lighthouse in 1795 and it was lit in 1797 by eighteen lamps. The tower was rebuilt in 1860 to allow the installation of a first order lens bringing the height of the tower to 110 feet. A new keeper’s duplex was added along with a new oil house and covered walkway at the same time. Lots of hard work and public money has been raised to keep the New York station in tiptop condition.
