Key Largo, Florida

Key Largo Lighthouse, with its decorative checkerboard pattern, was built in 1959 by a local property owner who learned of an authentic lantern room being sold by an Ocala, Florida junk dealer. He bought the lantern, shipped it to Key Largo and installed it on top of a concrete base and tower. Research shows that the lantern was rescued from Rebecca Shoal Lighthouse, which was dismantled in 1953. The lighthouse is privately owned.
