More Lighthouses Needed for Philippines
Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo of the Philippine Coast Guard has told that nation’s Congress that the Philippines needs 5,000 more lighthouses along its 22,548 miles of coastline. He stated that at the present time the country has 563 lighthouses and many of them are not functioning and many are actually endangered. The Admiral said that even with high tech aids to navigation, lighthouses continue to be relevant, especially with the nation’s many poor fishermen who simply cannot afford modern navigation equipment. He also said that existing lighthouses must be upgraded and preserved as tourist attractions, which could help offset the cost of maintaining them.

Saving Martha Vineyard’s Lighthouses
The true and lost story of how three of the lighthouses on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts were saved from demolition will be told in a fact-revealing story in the December issue of Lighthouse Digest. This is a story you will not want to miss. If you are not yet a subscriber you can do so or order a gift subscription by going to www.FogHornPublishing.com.

Not So Lucky
Massachusetts' Bishop and Clerk's Lighthouse did not have the good fortune that the lighthouses on Martha's Vineyard did. On September 11, 1952, as hundreds watched in dismay and astonishment, the United States Coast Guard blew up the lighthouse, destroying it forever. It was here that the shortest lighthouse keeper in history once served. You can now own a Harbour Lights replica of this lost lighthouse, which is available from Lighthouse Depot as item # 42366. It was produced in a limited release of only 1,500 replicas worldwide.

Many Uses Since the 1950s
Did you know that ever since the 1950s, when linen calendar towels were first introduced, they have become highly sought after collectibles? One of the benefits of owning a linen lighthouse calendar is that it can be used for a variety of purposes after the year is over, as a dish drying towel, a drawer liner, to cover the head rest on a chair, or saved as a collectible to remind one of a special event that happened during the year. Also, when you give one as a gift, not only will the gift recipient view it all year long, they will remember that you gave it to them. That’s why we would like to recommend the 2011 Coastal Breeze Linen Towel Calendar featuring a lighthouse scene by famous folk artist Warren Kimble. It is available from Lighthouse Depot as item # 13169. Since linen calendar towels generally sell out fast, you might consider ordering several now. The 2011 Coastal Breeze Lighthouse Towels are gift boxed for holiday giving or as stocking stuffers. They also make a great gift for schoolteachers, your family doctor, church pastor or neighbor.

Ghost Stories Abound
Stories of ghosts and haunting seem to abound at many lighthouses, not just at this time of the year, but year round. Many people consider Michigan’s Old Presque Isle Lighthouse as the most haunted lighthouse in the United States. You can own a replica of this lighthouse from Lighthouse Depot as item # 43285. Other ghostly products that might also interest you are the DVD Two Ghostly Lights # 26210 and Haunted Lighthouses and How to Find Them, item # 91293.

Ludlam Beach Lighthouse Destroyed
Efforts to save New Jersey’s former Ludlam Beach Lighthouse have failed and the structure was demolished by its owner. Although the structure no longer looked like a lighthouse and had been moved many years ago, many believed and worked hard in a last ditch attempt to save the 1800s structure. They had hoped to move it to a new location and restore it to its original grandeur. Unfortunately, their efforts failed. Sadly, another slice of American lighthouse history is now gone forever.
