The Lighthouses of Maine

New England’s leading lighthouse authority, Jeremy D’Entremont, celebrates the human stories behind more than sixty lighthouses, day beacons, and lightships, including several no longer in service.

• Abbie Burgess, sixteen year old daughter of the keeper at Matinicus Rock, kept the island’s lights burning through a stormy four-week period while caring for her invalid mother and younger siblings.
• At Cape Elizabeth Light Station, keeper Marcus Aurelius Hanna miraculously rescued two sailors from a sinking schooner during a raging blizzard.
• Light stations at Owls Head and Wood Island were the homes of fogbell-ringing dogs.
• Ghostly legends swirl through the histories of several Maine lighthouses.
