The beginning of the Civil War halted the construction of this lighthouse in 1860. By 1865, work resumed on the 142 ft tower. A 1st order lens lit the tower and was visible for 19 miles out to sea. By day, the bold red and white markings kept ships away from it’s Virginia shores.
