Brandywine Shoal Point, NJ
A lightship was originally stationed on the shores of Brandywine Shoal but in 1850 was transferred to another location. The first Lighthouse was constructed there in 1828 but was demolished by storms. A second lightship was then used until 1850 when a second tower was built. The new tower was a screw pile construction and was the first screw pile lighthouse not only in New Jersey but in the U.S. In 1914 a new conical structure was built and lit. The tower is only 45 feet high and had a third order Fresnel lens until converted to solar power in 1974.
