Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was established at the southernmost tip of Africa in 1849 and was South Africa’s second permanent light station. It had a revolving Fresnel lens in 1915. By 1962 the limestone structure was declared unsafe due to decomposition and replaced by a skeletal tower six years later. Funds were appropriated in 1983 to restore the lighthouse Which was re-lit in March 1988. Today the lighthouse serves as a museum and navigation aid.
