Cape Charles, VA
Four towers have been built at this location. The first lighthouse was built in 1828 and was only 50 feet tall. It was deemed inadequate and more funds were appropriated. Construction began in 1856 and Confederate raiders destroyed it during construction. The next tower was completed in 1864 but by 1889, erosion deemed it be condemned. The current tower was built in 1895. It was an octagonal pyramidal steel superstructure with a first order lens in the 191-foot tower. Today the tower is run by the U.S. Coast Guard and is a navigational aid.
