Cape Flattery, WA
Located at the northwestern-most point in the continental U.S., Cape Flattery lighthouse was first built in 1857 on land owned by the Makah Nation. As with most early west coast lighthouses, the building was a one-and-a-half story dwelling with the tower protruding through the center of the roof. This permitted keepers to access the tower without exposure to the elements. The first order lens was replaced with a fourth order lens in about 1930. Located on Tatoosh Island, WA the station was automated in 1977.
