Located on the southern tip of Key Biscayne Island, Cape Florida lighthouse was built in 1825. The beacon was dark during the Civil War and retired in 1878. In 1978 the Florida beacon was recommissioned by the Coast Guard and using actual 1855 plans from George Meade, restored to its pre-Civil War splendor.
