Cape Lookout - NC

Located at the south end of Core Banks in an area known as the “Horrible Headlands”, Cape Lookout Lighthouse was a brick tower encased with a wooden exterior painted with red and white horizontal stripes. Due to mist and fog, the North Carolina beacon was difficult to see. A new light was completed in 1859 and received its black and white checkered pattern so that it wouldn’t be confused with other lights in the area. Today the keeper’s quarters serve as a museum.
