Craighill Rear Range, MD
Located in Chesapeake Bay at the entrance to the Patapsco River, Craighill Channel cuts 5 miles off the southern approach to Baltimore. Craighill Rear Range Lighthouse is one of two channel lights marking the channel approach and was established in 1873. The Rear Lower Range light as depicted in this replica is shown as it stood in its prime. A 105 foot, four-sided iron frame enclosed a 2 story Victorian keeper’s house with a rectangular tower through the center. A summer Maryland storm in 1888 tore the roof from the building in addition to other damage. The structure was totally dismantled in the 1930’s leaving the white and red tower, lantern and stairway shaft.
