Edgartown - MA

On the eastern side of Martha’s Vineyard, this light was established in 1828 on the inner harbor in the town of Edgartown. The early beacon consisted of a simple tower located in the center of a Cape Cod style keeper’s cottage. Destroyed by the hurricane of 1938, the house was replaced by a cylindrical cast iron tower floated by barge to the island. Almost destroyed by vandals over the last twenty years, tremendous efforts have restored this sentinel. It now flashes a solar-powered red and white beam 170 feet above sea level.
