Fowey Rocks, FL
The 110-foot skeletal tower is located on a dangerous reef of Key Biscayne. It was first lit in June 1878. The open design of the lighthouse enabled high winds to pass through the structure-especially hurricane force winds common in the area. The most distinguished feature is the two-story octagonal-shape Victorian-style quarters that sit on a platform high above the sea. Rising from the Florida dwelling is the stair cylinder leading to the Tower room. The beacon was a powerful first order lens and that lens is on display to this day at the Coast Guard School in Virginia.
