Georgetown, SC

Also referred to as North Island Light, the tower was built in 1801 of cypress wood and fueled by whale oil. Georgetown Lighthouse was destroyed by a violent storm in 1806. Rebuilt in 1812 of brick, it held a fourth order lens. That tower was badly damaged during the Civil War but in post-war repairs, the structure was raised to 87 feet. There is hope that the tower will one day be restored and open to the public. It is managed by the South Carolina Heritage Trust.
