Hereford Inlet, NJ Event Pc
First lit in 1874 Hereford Inlet Lighthouse lost its first keeper to a tragic drowning after only three months of service. In 1913 a violent storm left the building sitting precariously over the surf with one edge even protruding over the edge. Officials decided to then relocate the New Jersey Lighthouse 150 feet to higher and safer grounds. The sentinel remained in service until 1964. The Coast Guard then moved the optic to a nearby skeleton tower and the lighthouse was abandoned. After being acquired by the City of North Wildwood in 1982 the lighthouse underwent several years of restoration.
