Indian River Life Saving Station, DE
The Indian River Life Saving Station was one of four sites along the Atlantic coast to assist ships unable to make it safety. It came into service in 1876 and was manned from September through May by a keeper and six surfmen. The original building was located beyond the dunes on the beach to protect it from the stormy seas that battered it. The station was used until 1962 when it was abandoned. The Delaware Seashore Preservation Foundation completely restored the station and it opened to the public in 1998.
