Stories for December 2007

Lighthouse Digest commissioned this month’s cover painting by Maine artist Virginia Souza. This whimsical work of art of Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most visited and photographed lighthouses in the world, shows that even Santa and Rudolph stop by every Christmas to visit. This is the 10th year that Virginia Souza has painted a Christmas cover for Lighthouse Digest. Virginia has been painting all her life. In fact, she was 12 years old when she sold her very first painting; a watercolor of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Hampshire. While she visited recently, a tour bus from the Pennsylvania Dutch Country was there. With so many people were hustling and bustling in and out of the gift shop, smiling with their packages, she was inspired. She thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice to see that no one was forgotten on Christmas? Not even the one who is doing the most for everyone else, Santa Claus.” How fun to see Rudolph giving Santa the perfect gift from Maine. As you might have guessed, Santa loves Maine lobster! If you look out past the tower, in the distance on the water, you will also spot the “spirit” of the ship that was wrecked on the rocks at the lighthouse on Christmas Eve so many years ago — as it sails on again. No one should be forgotten at Christmas. And yes Santa, there is a Virginia, who, along with Rudolph’s help, remembered you this Christmas season. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good light!
