Old Pt Loma CA

Started in 1854 and built with sandstone from Monterey, builders discovered that the first order lens was too big for the lantern room and had to settle for a third order lens instead. It rises 462 feet above sea level and has the highest focal plane of any lighthouse in the US. After serving as a coastal California light for only 36 years, the lantern was extinguished in 1891. Old Point Loma was almost destroyed in 1913 but was saved and has recently been refurbished to depict the 1880’s.
