Ponce de Leon FL

Originally known as Mosquito Inlet, Ponce de Leon Inlet was built finally in 1884 and 60 miles of coastline between St Augustine and Cape Canaveral were no longer dark and dangerous. This lighthouse was the second tallest on the Atlantic coast and housed a first order lens. Oil had to be carried up 203 steps to the lantern room. The Florida light was decommissioned in 1970. The tower, keeper’s cottages and outbuildings have been restored as a museum and the original lens is on exhibit.
