Roanoke River Light, NC

A lightship initially guarded the entrance to the Roanoke River until the Civil War began. After the war, a screwpile lighthouse was constructed in 1866 but it did not last long due to fire. The same style light was rebuilt in 1877 and remained in service until the 1940’s. In 1955 a maritime salvager bought the North Carolina light and moved it inland. A replica of the light is to be built from plans recovered from the archives of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society.
