St Simons, GA

The original St Simons lighthouse was constructed in 1810 but was destroyed by retreating Confederate soldiers as the Civil War ended. After illness struck most of the crew building the new light, it was finally ready in 1872. A cast iron spiral staircase led to the lantern room and an adjacent keeper’s dwelling and fireproof oil house were also constructed. The lighthouse is still owned by the Coast Guard and leased by the Georgia Historical Society. The light is open year round and the keeper’s quarters serves as a nautical museum.
