Ship Island Lens
The lens from the no longer standing Ship Island Lighthouse, Mississippi has been returned to the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum's temporary location in Biloxi, MS. The lens was nearly destroyed during Hurricane Katrina when a wall of the museum collapsed on it shattering the lens into 100 pieces. The lens was put back together by lens expert Joseph Cocking and had been on temporary exhibit after it was restored at Florida's St. Augustine Lighthouse.

New Dungeness leader passes
Barry Dove, one of the driving forces behind saving Washington’s New Dungeness Lighthouse, has died at the age of 55 after fighting a battle with cancer. Until his resignation last November, Dove was the lone paid staff member of the New Dungeness Lighthouse Association, a position he earned after a decade of volunteering. Friends and associates all agreed that he was a get-it-done person who will have to be replaced by six people. Barry is survived by his wife of 27 years, Belinda and daughter Xisa, 16, his mother and a brother. In his honor, the historical sites trail around the station will be named the Barry Dove Interpretative Trail and the top-most window in the lighthouse tower has been donated in his name. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Biloxi Goes Golfing
The winner of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Golf Tournament received a cash prize of $240,000 plus a 14” replica of the newly restored and recently reopened Biloxi Lighthouse. Dot Black, who recently underwent hip replacement surgery, will now be devoting most of her time to the Maine Lighthouse Museum, founded by her late husband, Ken Black, who was known by most as Mr. Lighthouse. Dot is to be congratulated for her 10 years of dedication to the restoration of Maine’s Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.

New Book on the Hard Luck Coast
JoAnn Semones, who has written a couple of past stories in Lighthouse Digest, has a new book out titled, Hard Luck Coast: The Perilous Reefs of Point Montara. This new book follows her previously successful book, Shipwrecks, Scalawags and Scavengers: The Storied Waters of Pigeon Point. The book deals with the disasters and near disasters off Point Montara in a scholarly, yet affectionate, style that is both easy to read as well as informative. The Point Montara Lighthouse is the only American lighthouse to have stood on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. Hard Luck Coast can be ordered from Glencannon Press Maritime Books at 1-800-771-8985 or on-line at www.glencannon.com.

Last Depot Dispatch Trivia Winners

  1. What city in Indiana has a love affair with one of its lighthouses?

The correct answer is Michigan City, Indiana. Congratulations to our winner Christine Fenner of Prescott, Arizona whose name was randomly selected from amongst the correct answers submitted.

  2. Four Great Lakes Lighthouses, all no longer standing, looked like they might have been designed as space ships or rockets, long before space travel happened. One community now wants to build a replica of one of these structures. Name two of the four lighthouses.

Actually, we were mistaken; there were five lighthouses of similar design. They were built in Petoskey, Michigan, Sheboygan, Kenosha, and Racine, Wisconsin and in Waukegan, Illinois. Petoskey, Michigan is going to build a replica of the original lighthouse. Unfortunately, no one submitted a correct answer with names of two of the lighthouses.

  3. What was the name of the government agency that managed lighthouses in the United States, prior to the Coast Guard?

The correct answer is United States Bureau of Lighthouses. Many people responded with an answer of United States Lighthouse Service, which was the common name, but the official name was Bureau of Lighthouses. Congratulations to Tracy Winters of Greensburg, Tennessee whose name was randomly selected from the correct answers submitted.

Congratulations to our winners! We wish to thank everyone who entered the trivia contest. The winners’ prizes will be mailed to them within the next few days. Our trivia contest can be fun for anyone interested in lighthouses and history. Please pass the word around and encourage others to sign up for the Depot Dispatch.

Since 2004 the lighthouse was leased by ExxonMobil to the American Lighthouse Foundation and through this unique partnership the exterior of the lighthouse was restored and the lighthouse was relit. ExxonMobil has now donated the lighthouse to the American Lighthouse Foundation. The historic lighthouse is now being cared for by its chapter, The Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse. This is a wonderful example of a corporate and nonprofit partnership that can be used as an example to be followed by other major corporations around the world.

Lighthouse Tenders
Lighthouse Tenders were the lifelines of the lighthouse keepers, especially at remote lighthouse stations. They delivered supplies such as food, fuel and books. As more and more lighthouses had their keepers removed, the visits of the lighthouse tender became less frequent and they concentrated on maintaining the many aids to navigation placed in our waterways. The Lighthouse Tender Narcissus was one of three 122-foot tenders built in 1939 at the transition time when the Lighthouse Service became part of the Coast Guard. The vessel was decommissioned in 1971 and sold to the nation of Guyana. When the Coast Guard delivered the vessel to its new country, onboard the ship were 4,000 pounds of books for the nation’s poor people as part of “Project Handclasp.” You can now own a replica of this historic ship to proudly display in your home to honor the heritage this vessel played to our nation. It is available from Lighthouse Depot as item # 43123.
