Extinguishing the Light: Farewell Voyage to the Tower
A visit to the last of the lights that have guarded North Carolina treacherous shoals for over 140 years. Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower is scheduled to be demolished. An important part of Maritime and Coast Guard history will soon be gone forever. • Four lights in one day. We will also sail by: "Old Baldy" – the oldest lighthouse in NC (1818) Prices Creek Light: on doomsday list (1848) Oak Island Light – strongest light in US • Meet "the last light keepers": • Joe Floyd (pictured), who served aboard the Lightship "Relief" • Mike Allen who was one of the last men to serve aboard Frying Pan Tower before it was automated. Joe Floyd (pictured above), who served aboard the Lightship "Relief" at Frying Pan Shoals in 1954. Joe will share stories from his days of guarding the shoals, including riding out the biggest hurricane to hit the Carolinas in the 20th century.
