Captain Blaine D. Horrocks, Chief, Aids to Navigation, U.S. Coast Guard, Boston gave the keynote address at the dedication of the Boon Island lens at the Kittery Naval Museum in Kittery, Maine. Horrocks said the Coast Guard’s decision to place the lens with the museum was based on the town’s long-standing connection with Boon Island Light and its continuing interest in the lens since many of Boon Island’s keepers were from Kittery. He went on to say that the Fresnel lens itself serves as a source of interest to many people saying, “Some will come to appreciate the actual physics involved in the magnification of the light - Many will marvel at its shear artistic beauty - All will undoubtedly experience the emotional pull...the compelling allure of lighthouse, ships, and the sea.”
