Photo Caption:

Turkey Point Lighthouse, Maryland, from a vintage photograph. A number of women who served as lighthouse keepers here at Turkey Point, prior to Fannie Salter, endured much hardship performing their duties. After Fannie Salter, the last female lighthouse keeper in the United States, retired as keeper, the house, although boarded up, was heavily damaged by vandals. In the 1960’s, the Coast Guard tore down the keepers house, removed part of the stairway in the tower and padlocked the door. The lighthouse is now featured on a special Maryland license plate.
