Rany Jennette is shown here in his National Park Service uniform. Rany was born in the keeper’s house at Cape Hatteras Light Station in 1921. His father was Unaka Jennette who was the lighthouse keeper from 1919 to 1939. Unable to follow his father’s footsteps in the U.S. Lighthouse Service (since it was dissolved in 1939), he joined the U. S. Coast Guard in 1941 and saw some dangerous duty during World War II. In 1984 he joined the National Park Service as seasonal staff. He was a natural as an interpreter at the Visitors Center, telling hundreds of thousands of visitors about the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and what is what like to grow up there. In 1995 Rany met and married lighthouse volunteer, Lynn O’Neill. They expressed their vows beside his boyhood home with the beauty of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse towering in the background. His wife, Lynn, is co-chair of the Cape Hatteras Descendants Homecoming. The complete story on Rany Jennette can be found in the book Lighthouse Families by Cheryl Shelton-Roberts.
