In 1856 Pleasanton sent a letter to President-Elect James Buchanan seeking compensation for his heroic deed in saving America’s most valuable documents. In fact, he said in his letter to Buchanan “for saving these papers, the British government, had that been done for it, would probably have given me many thousand pounds.” It is unknown whether Buchanan ever authorized any reward to Pleasonton, however it is doubtful. Sketch by Melissa Pelletier.
