Devils Island Lighthouse in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands was originally completed as a plain self-supporting cylinder, but the high winds of the area caused the tower to sway and shake so much that the lighthouse keepers complained that the motion would actually extinguish the lamp as well as most likely instilling a bit of fear into the person at the top of the tower. This rare photograph shows the braces under construction as they are being added to support the tower giving it the appearance that we see there today.
