A late 1930's view from the bluff at the Lightkeepers dwelling showing the S. Haven Life Saving Station, lighthouse (nearly hidden by the smoke), piers, and a freighter entering the harbor. We are not clear what the erector style lighthouse looking tower is. It very well might have been the Signal Service tower, which according to records was established in August 1878. Old records talk about a lantern and flags being delivered to Keeper Donahue for the Signal Service and that he would be paid an additional $7.50 to $7.75 per month, depending on the number of days in the month, for this service. Records mention a government signal station that was equipment with oil lamps, then later electrified to warn of pending bad weather and storms.
