The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood will celebrate its 123rd anniversary on Saturday, July 12, with a Founders Day program of free activities.

In keeping with the lighthouse's Victorian heritage, the daylong program will include tours by guides in Victorian costumes, Gay Nineties music, a seminar on how to grow a garden and an art competition for elementary school children.

A highlight of the day will be a ceremony at which two checks totaling $106,712 will be given to the lighthouse for repairs to the structure.

"We believe our lighthouse and the beautiful gardens that surround it are one of the most scenic spots in New Jersey, and we are holding this founders day program to make everyone aware of it," said Paul Di Filippo, chairman of the lighthouse commission.

The lighthouse attracted 20,000 visitors last year, but Di Filippo said a concerted effort is now being made to increase that total in 1997.

"In some respects, we are the best kept secret among lighthouses in New Jersey," he added. "We hope this event will bring many more visitors to the lighthouse this year."

Hereford Inlet Light, will be celebrating Founders Day this July 12. The public is invited.
