It started on July 12-the move of historic Cape Cod Lighthouse 450 feet westward to a safer location away from an eroding cliff over the Atlantic Ocean.
It ended Monday August 5, as the 420-ton lighthouse, inching its way along seven huge beams coated with Ivory soap to inhibit friction, was finally located over its newly poured concrete footing (far Left). Later, its companion piece, the keepers house, was moved next to it, a speedier job using huge rubber tires and a steel frame under the structure.
Now begins the relatively uncomplicated process of constructing brick foundations, restoring the two structures, landscaping and finally, probably by next spring, opening them to the public. The contract with the international Chimney Company of Buffalo NY includes building public restrooms in addition to the historic Highland House, which holds the Truro Historical Museum collection.
