Maine’s Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse got some extra sweet attention this past holiday season when a local baker made a gigantic gingerbread replica of it.

Under the direction of baker Carol Thompson, who owns the Pastry Garden in Rockland, the gingerbread lighthouse had Necco wafers as roof tiles and Tootsie Roll chimneys and was covered with a fresh Maine frosting snow. Not being one to lose authenticity, Carlo even made sure the light in the tower actually lit up. Volunteers Susan Pengelly and Sharon Shaw helped Carol.

Carol is no stranger to lighthouses; her great uncle Weston Thompson was a lighthouse keeper at Maine’s Matinicus Rock Lighthouse and her mother is a summer volunteer at the Shore Village Lighthouse Museum in Rockland.

The gingerbread lighthouse, which took about 30 hours to make, was raffled off to benefit the Friends of the Rockland Breakwater, which is a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation.
