Virginia’s Assateague Lighthouse will appear on the 2003-2004 Federal Duck Stamp from a winning painting done by artist Ron Louque.
Louque’s acrylic painting of a pair of snow geese won over 250 other entries in a contest that is held yearly by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Louque is one of these guys who never gives up. He has been entering the Federal Duck Stamp contest every year since 1973 and this is the first time he won.
Wildfowl hunters’ ages 16 and older are required by law to buy duck stamps, but the stamps are more sought after by stamp collectors, art lovers and conservationists.
Sales of Federal Duck Stamps have generated more than $600 million that has been used to preserve over 5 million acres of waterfowl habitat in the United States. IN fact, many of the more than 538 national wildlife refuges have been paid for all or in part by Duck Stamp money.
The new stamp will go on sale July 1, 2003.
