Missing lighthouse film, a mystery

A number of years ago, we assume some time around 1980, the Northern New England Marine Education Project in a joint effort with the University of Maine, College of Education and Maine-New Hampshire Sea Grant published a work on Maine lighthouses for 8th graders.

The authors of the work were Harry Dreser Jr, and Lester Picker with contributions by John Butzow, Victor DiSilvestro and Steven Kilfoyle.

They produced a 45-minute interview with Dorothy and Roscoe Fletcher in reel-to-reel form. Roscoe Fletcher was the assistant lighthouse keeper at Petit Manan from 1931-1936 and keeper at Matinicus Rock Light from 1936-1945.

Also produced at that time was a series of 70 slides and recorded commentary and a brief film strip Lighthouses of Maine.

The work was a result of sponsorship of NOAA Office of Sea Grant, Department of Commerce.

The mystery is: what happened to the reel-to-reel film interview with Roscoe Fletcher, the 70 slides and the filmstrip on Maine lighthouses?

We are especially interested in locating the reel-to-reel interview with Keeper Fletcher. This would be an irreplaceable valuable artifact that must be duplicated and saved for future generations. But what happened to it?

It was originally available through the Instructional Systems Center, Shibles Hall, University of Maine in Orono, Maine. However we have contacted the University and found out that ten years ago the Instructional Systems Center dispersed their material and as of yet, an extensive search has not turned up the film interview with Keeper Fletcher.

If you can help us locate the film interview with Keeper Fletcher or any of the other items please contact us at once at Tim Harrison, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 1690, Wells, ME 04090 or call us at 207-646-0515 or email our editor at Timh@Lhdiigest.com.
