The Beacons of the Bay, Harbour Lights Collectors Club recently donated the club’s raffle proceeds toward the restoration efforts at Virginia’s New Point Comfort Lighthouse.
Club president, Jerry Siatowski (l) and vice president, Bill Hoffman, (far right) presented a check from the group for $500.00 to Earl Soles, Jr., Chairman of the New Point Comfort Lighthouse Preservation Task Force, (2nd from left) and Judy Burroughs, Matthews County Treasurer.
The donation has some real gusto to it since it will be matched dollar for dollar as part of a grant from the Virginia General Assembly. The presentation was made on the observation platform across the water from the lighthouse.
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is including the lighthouse in a study of the shoreline erosion along the Chesapeake Bay. The initial priority of the New Point Comfort Lighthouse Preservation Task Force is to halt erosion of the land under the lighthouse. Once the ground is secured, they can begin work on the actual lighthouse.
