The patch worn by the staff at North Shore Ambulance in Salem, MA was sent to us by Robert A. Dionne, VP of the company. The company was founded in 1983 by Joseph O’Neil Jr. and today employs over 130 full time employees and provides ‘911’ emergency service for the Massachusetts communities of Salem, Marblehead, Peabody, and Beverly comprising about 250,000 people. Two of their emergency vehicles are shown here with the Winter Island (Fort Pickering) Lighthouse in Salem, Massachusetts in the background.

Ken Krick of Stafford Springs, Ct who also shared with us some information on the group, sent the Southern Maine Volkssport Association lighthouse patch to us. Volkssport is intended to mean “sport of the people.” Volkssport events are organized to entice people of every age, both genders, and all levels of athletic prowess to exercise outdoors at their own pace. These non-competitive events may be walks, bikes, swims, or cross-country skis. Most popular, however, are the walks - usually 10 kilometers on a well-marked trail with directions and a map to get you back where you started. Each walk is free. However, those wishing to pay a $3.00 registration fee can participate in an international organization’s achievement award program, which may provide some additional incentive for reluctant walkers to get out and exercise. For an additional fee, those who finish may take home a small memento of their accomplishments.
